Lesson Tasks (Photography 2)

Lesson Task 1.1

Question 1 – Written assignment (30 min)

  • Name three lighting sources and their functions.
  • Name two light modifiers and explain the difference between them.
  • Draw a diagram of and describe the three-point lighting setup.

Tungsten lights; Tungsten lights is an artificial lighting source (like a lamp or ceiling fixture) that gives out heat and produce a warmer colour

LEDs; LEDs are also an artificial lighting source. It transforms electrical energy directly into light, delivering efficient light generation with little electricity use. LEDs can usually choose between a warm or cold color temperature.

Strobe lights; Strobe lights are artificial, and are more powerful lights that act independently of the camera. There are two main types of strobe lights. 1. Monolights, which act independently and use their own power source. 2. Head and power packs, which consists of several lights that share a power pack and may be controlled centrally using the controls on the power pack. Strobe lights can be many different colors depending on your need, and are usually able to mix these.

Question 2 – Research assignment (2 hours)

  1. Draw three studio setups for the following subject matters and list all the equipment you would use to light your subjects:
    • Portrait;
    • Fashion;
    • Beauty.

Portrait;

Equipment;
Soft light (Monolight)
Softbox
Stand and grip for lights

Fashion;

Equipment;
Smaller light source to gain hard light (Strobe light or LED)
Softbox
Reflector
Stand and grip for lights

Beauty;

Equipment;
Soft light (Strobe light or LED)
Softbox
Reflector
Stand and grip for lights

2.In a magazine or on the internet, find one fashion shot, a beauty shot, and a portrait shot and explain how you think the lighting was set up in each shot:

Fashion shot;

I think the key light is set up to the left of the camera to catch most light on the right side of the model. There is a fill light closely to the right of the camera to decrease the shadow contrast coming from the key light. For back light they most likely have a light above the model to gain the highlights on her hair and makeup.

Beauty shot;

The key light is set to the right of the camera slightly raised above the model. The fill light is a tiny bit to the left of the camera to soften the shadows. I think the backlight is above the model to gain the highlights in her hair, nose and cheeks.

Portrait shot;

The key light is set to the left of the camera. The fill light is to the right of the camera, but quite far away to still soften the light, but keep most of the contrast. The back light is probably behind the model a little to the left of the camera to gain a highlight rim on the right side of the model.
