Lesson Tasks (Sketching Techniques)

Task 2.1

Scamps

”You are briefed to illustrate fruit juice packaging (grapefruit, pineapple, and apple flavour). The name of the product is Easy Squeezy”

1: Draw at least 15 scamps (they can be A6 size each) of what the label will look like. Remember to include the fruit, the name of the flavor and the name of the product.

When I started to draw my ideas, I quickly realized after about 4 drawings that this would be very hard. It took me the whole day to just think and think about all the 15 design ideas and sketch them. I drew the main logos that would be on the packaging of the fruit juice, since sketching packaging would take longer, and make it harder to actually see the design.

2.Choose one of your sketches and draw the label using Adobe Illustrator. The artwork can be A6 (landscape or portrait).

I think juice boxes fit more for children, so I went for one of my sketches that had a kid friendly look. I ended up also trying to put it on a small juice box packaging.

Task 2.2

Task 2.3

History of graphic design

In the lesson, we looked at some articles that focus on key events in the past century that have impacted modern graphic design.

Choose five of these key events and do more research on each.

In your own words, using the extra knowledge you have gained in your research, write a paragraph about each, explaining what impact it had on graphic design. Include visual examples if you have

New Typography

The new typography was an event that had a huge impact on graphic design. It was a movement that rejected the rules of symmetrical columns, and would rather let the designer be free to have an asymmetrical but still satisfying design. Rather than having the restrictions of following the old rules of poster, book and other designs this movement started a new age of graphic design. It was often very simple designs, containing few colors with an unordinary positioning of shapes and typography. It was a movement that was built around rejecting the traditional rules of composition, making graphic designers a lot more free to think outside the box.

Pop Art

Taking inspiration from commercial visuals and cultural moments, the pop art changed the style with its bright colors and big bold typography, with
dotted textures and simplified color management. There were often only a few bright colors with a mix of texture, that made the designs very eye-catching. The style got popular in magazines and I think it is one of the events that we can see has most impact today. It used a lot of popular and recognized personas, and therefore got accepted in the every-day public. The art of design got more accessible for the public due to the style of an every-day, positive and fun way to communicate. Instead of going off on peoples anxieties or addictions, the style would rather invite people with its fun way to communicate a message with colors and shapes. It was also a period where a lot of comics were made in this style.

Introduction of Photoshop

Photoshop boosted the way for a designer to be more creative. It was a tool few could get their hands on at first, but later on as the technology became better, more got the chance to learn it. The tool helped artists to be more free with their designs, and it also helped creating art faster. There was of course a lot of other software that tried the same as Photoshop, but Ps had the best and most optimal features, turning it to the main software for artists. I think the main impact Photoshop had on Graphic Design, was how easily you now could do almost all kinds of graphic design, on this one software. It is possible to export your designs in multiple different file types, and you still see Photoshop be the most popular program for all kind of graphic designers.

Computer Arts launches

It was an event that went over a period of time, starting one of the first magazines based on pure graphic design. The start of the computer art era did a great impact on the graphic design industry. It was mainly a way for professional and beginner designers to show off their work or get inspiration. Throughout some years it got hosted events for computer art designers, and due to this a lot of new artists got born. The main impact this had, was the way the computer arts could be on the web, to inspire new ideas. It was also very easy to get responds from other designers to further improve your own skills. The digital artists got born. They only used the strict computer access in the early days, turning it into our modern computer art which is often combined with illustration designs or even painting today. Not a lot of people think about how much the computer technology had an impact on graphic design, at least I did not really before reading about it.

Modern Graphic Design

The modern graphic design is a broad sphere of different types of artists. The main purpose of a modern graphic designer can be very diverse, but they all have something in common. Visual communication with the people, making a bridge between art and communication. This is made with the help of some kind of strategy or technical software, often mixing and making new methods. Modern graphic designers has the job to tell a story or give a message via graphic or visual designs. These jobs can be business logos, packaging, advertising, 3D animation for entertainment and a lot more. The modern graphic design has gotten a lot more diverse, and due to this there is now the possibility to be a lot more free with your designs. The style of modern graphic design is kind of a reflection of the whole history of graphic design, due to old styles and methods often being brought back nowadays, such as simplified art which was popular on the 1960s.
