Lesson Tasks (Idea Development)

Task 1.1

Lateral thinking

*Look at the following and guess what they are communicating. Just for fun, see if you can make one or more of your own*

The word ”bottle” is used to shape it like a bottle can. So I guess bottle can.

The word is emotions, but the letters are mixed in a different order, therefore I guess mixed emotions.

If you break the word fast, you would get breakfast.

This one took me a while, but after realizing it was obvious. The ”an” is inside the job, so therefore ”an inside job

Cover cops, but since the cop is under the word cover, undercover cop is what made most sense.

I don’t know why it took me a while to figure this one out, but after a while it came to me. the seven seas, of course!

I figured since it said step twice, then ”pets” which is ”steps” backwards,
I would guess two steps forward, one step backwards.

This one I could not figure out…

Because its donuts ”Do nuts” or Do not. First I though the meaning could be Do not kill. Thinking further though, it’s criminal donuts so the meaning could
also be ”do no crime”. Made most sense after saying ”Donut crime” enough times.

This one was obvious. It’s pills that is sleeping so it would be sleeping pills.

I really liked this one, simple but also very creative way to communicate ”window shopping”.

This task was fun, but also annoying when it took me a while to analyze them. The lesson made me think outside the box for a little bit as well. I made one myself for fun, with two different versions, one is maybe a little easier to analyze due to a simpler design.

Task 1.2

Ideation

*There are plenty of ideation techniques available. Use the Internet for research and choose three that you would like to try in the future or have used before. Describe how they work in no less than a paragraph*

1. Sketching

It might be easier for some to see the ideas visually, not only verbally. The sketch does not really have to be perfect, it usually would be a rough drafts or simple sketches that can illustrate your ideas. Personally this is the technique I use most. Sometimes I have difficulties explaining my ideas, and would rather illustrate it at first hand. Having a group that makes sketching ideas, you would pass around the sketches and they would be built upon by the group. After a while looking through them all you might find connections between the drawings that can help you find an optimal design solution.

Example sketches from some of my old projects:

2. Mash-Up

So after searching around, I came over the Mash-up method. The point is to make ideas by combining two different elements and concepts together. Firstly you would make a list of different elements and concepts.
Example; Existing services, Technology, Laws, Society, Nature
Secondly you would start to ideate around each element and concept.
Example;
Technology; Phones, Computer, 3D machine,
Society; Cars, Trains, Flights, Schools, Newspaper, Social media

Thirdly you mash 2 or more of the generated elements/concepts together to form a idea.
Example could be;
3D machine + Schools + Organic products. An 3D machine setup for schools,
using organic material to create projects students would otherwise have to maybe illustrate

3. Crazy 8’s

This method I would like to start practice myself as well. Firstly you would fold a page in half, and then one more time to create 8 boxes. Then you set a timer for 8 minutes, so it would be 1 minute per box. You now have 8 minutes to draw 8 different ideas. And that is how the method works. If you would have a group, share the sketches, and go again with 4 sketches instead, then you narrow it down more by only sketching 1 or 2 of your best ideas. This practice makes you think rapid, and would come in good use if you use it a lot, to therefore think fast even though you usually have more time on your projects.

Task 1.3

SCAMPER Packaging

*You must design packaging for a lightbulb. The packaging must be different from what is out there in the market.

Apply each one of the SCAMPER techniques and do a write‑up on your findings. Then choose the option you think would work best and sketch what the packaging would look like*

S- Substitue

C-Combine

A-Adapt

M-Modify

P-Put to other use

E-Eliminate

R-Reverse/Rearrange

*Research*

After doing some research in my local stores and online, I found out most packaging were made out of cardboard and the shape was mostly square, with a basic design. Almost all packages had see-through plastic so it is possible to look at the product as well.

Substitute

  • Looking through the internet for different materials to take us of, I came over hemp cardboard instead of non-biodegradable cardboard.
  • Hemp bioplastic as an packaging option instead of normal plastic.

Combine

  • Combine hemp cardboard and thin hemp plastic for main packaging module.
  • The thin hemp plastic is used as a window to look at the product.

Adapt

  • Switching regular light bulb out with an biodegradable LED bulb, for a better environment choice.
  • Two seeds inside the light bulb, so the bulb can be used as housing whenever it dies, and turn into a plant over time.
  • Screwable bottom part on light bulb, to take off after use. This way the seeds can also be released before the bulb is dead if that is wanted.

Modify

  • Modifying the shape from square to a pottery plant shape, where the bulb is displayed inside as a ”plant”.
  • Have the hemp plastic as a half globe on top of the package, and make it screwable so you can open it. This also makes it easier for the customer to look at the product.
  • Different colors depending on what kind of seeds are inside. Three different seeds, so three colors like blue, green and yellow.

Put to other use

  • Due to the packaging, it is perfect to use as an actual pottery plant after using the light bulb. This way you have a perfect home for your seeds after buying the product.

Eliminate

  • Remove all the long instructions on the back, and rather replace it with a QR code that informs about the color themes of what seeds, as well as materials used to make the packaging and instructions how to re-use the product.

Reverse/Rearrange

Use organic foam for the spot where the bulb is, to keep it tight in case of losing the package in the ground. Less risk of damaging the light bulb.
